Delight & Christ
“Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Psalm 37:4
Can you remember what it was like to turn 16? Thoughts of obtaining your driver’s license, freedom, and buying your first set of wheels, all seemed to occupy your thoughts. I don’t know about you but I can certainly remember. For me it was excitement beyond description. I could finally get a real job. I would no longer have to depend on my parents for rides. No more school bus. Why? Mustang!
That’s right, I had purchased a Mustang. Even though my dad made sure it came equipped with a 4-cylinder, it was still a Stang. Look out world.
Life involves several opportunities for similar excitement, but none of these will ever come close to the opportunity we have with God. Why do I say that? You guessed it; God is the greatest gift possible to mankind. Could God give us anything more valuable or precious than Himself? No.
His brilliance is unmatched. His glory outshines the sun. His holiness is unapproachable. His wisdom knows no limits. His power shames the mightiest. His love is sweeter than honey. All of this is behind Psalm 37.
This Psalm encourages us to find our ultimate delight in God. Our passions, pursuits, and joy are to find their gaze fixed upon the God of Heaven. This means we should be more excited about God than we are about driving our first Mustang. Is this a reality for you? Are you so enamored by God that you think of Him often and seek to please Him?
That’s not all. The rest of the Psalm involves a promise. If you delight yourself in God, then you can trust that He will, ‘give you the desires of your heart.’ Think about it. If you desire the presence of God in your life; if you long to see Jesus face to face; if you hunger and thirst for righteousness, then He will grant your desire. He gives Himself to you. What a blessing.
Too often we settle for far less than we should. Don’t settle for anything less that Jesus Christ, for in Him you have everything.

I’ve heard several people use this to “sanctify” achieving their personal dreams without remembering that key “in the LORD” phrase.
BTW Doug, I don’t know if you’ve seen it or not, but John Piper hosted an eschatology forum a week or two ago. I haven’t listened to all of it, but the audio and video are free on desiringgod.org.
