smu edu romans 1As Paul works to encourage believers in Rome to recognize and appreciate their unity in Christ, he identifies the reality that we as believers, those who have received adoption by the Spirit, share in the inheritance of Christ (Rom. 8:17) as we share in His suffering and look forward to sharing in His glory; this reality is true for all who experience God’s gracious adoption by faith, both Jews and Gentiles, slaves and free, male and female (Gal. 3:26-29; 4:7). We enjoy this collective standing and can remain confident in the promise of our inheritance (Heb. 6:17ff) and that it is reserved in Heaven by God for us (1 Pt. 1:4, 5).
