Q. What should I do if my government sends me to war, but the Bible says thou shalt not kill? Should I be a conscientious objector?

A. This question is quite appropriate considering current events. Although I can not tell you to be or not to be a conscientious objector, I can assure you that God will not hold you accountable for murder if you are involved in war as a soldier. The primary passage that supports this is found in Romans.
In Romans 13:1-5, the Apostle Paul teaches the following points:

 Every person is to be submissive to government.
 God establishes all authority.
 If you resist authority, then you resist God’s plan for society.
 There is no need to fear government if you are a law-abiding citizen.
 Government is a ‘minister’ from God for our good.
 If, however, you commit a crime you are subject to its authority, which involves punishment and even death.
 Government ‘brings wrath on the one who practices evil.’
 The government, being a minister of God, is subject to God for its decisions and conduct. If government violates God’s plan for society, then He will judge the ruling authorities.

In this passage we see the authority and responsibility of a government to preserve and protect society. When individuals commit crime the government has the responsibility to punish. This also includes crimes between governments. If one nation attacks or violates the freedom and laws of another nation, the nation attacked is within its God given rights to defend itself. This of course involves thoughtful consideration to make sure that the war is a just war.

Once a nation has determined that it is necessary to become involved in a just war, the government has the authority to use ‘the sword’ in bringing justice. ‘The sword’ is simply an ancient way of describing lethal force.

If you are called upon by your nation to serve in the military you are simply participating in God’s plan for protecting society.
